What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (“BJJ” or “jiu jitsu”) is a martial art that focuses mainly on groundfighting. The sport is based on self-defense but is nowadays also practiced as a competitive sport. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the goal is to control your opponent on the ground. This is done by using leverage instead of force and by submissions such as joint locks or chokes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a growing sport that is gaining more and more ground these days.

Being a girl, fighting whilst being on the ground is not an uncommon scenario when it comes to self-defense. This alone could already be a reason for you to try out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. But there is more to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu than that!
