Ladies Representing At IBJJF Master World Championship

Just a few weeks away until Las Vegas will be crowded with athletes ready to fight for gold and glory at IBJJF Master World Championship, the event is for athletes from the age 30 and above. Take a closer look at these names amongst which are World Champions, MMA pioneers and top ranked competitors.

Featherweight, Andressa Lidia de Souza, representing Barbosa Jiu Jitsu, an active competitor who is currently ranked as number 5 on IBJJF’s list over female black belt competitors in Master 1. The same division also gives us Karen Deisy Antunes Girotto Borges from Checkmat, an exciting competitor to watch who holds World Champion title in 2013 as a purple belt and European Champion as a brown belt in 2014. Eirin Cathrine Nygren made her debut as a black belt this year, coming from four times European Champion in 2011 (blue), 2015 (brown and absolute) and 2016 (brown).

In lightweight we have two interesting names in Sarah Johnel Black and Jena Rae Bishop, Sarah is representing GD Jiu-Jitsu Association, an active competitor in both adult and master division, black belt since 2015 under Gustavo Dantas. Jena, a fierce competitor who is representing Gracie Humaita, holds a World Champion title from 2013 as a brown belt and her list of accomplishments is long all the way from 2007.

In middleweight we keep an eye at the jiu jitsu phenomenon Amanda Loewen from SBG International, a dedicated athlete who got her black belt after just 5 years of training. In medium-heavy Checkmat is represented by Shanti A.D Abelha, currently ranked as number two on IBJJF’s list over female black belt competitors in Master 1 division also her teammate Ida Josefin Hansson, a three times European Champion in 2008 (blue), 2011 (brown black) and 2012 (black) will be exciting to watch.

Master 2 super heavy division gives us IBJJF currently ranked as number one Luana Beatriz Gomes Fiquene representing Riberio Jiu-Jitsu. In the same category but in the lightweight division an active competitor and black belt under Renzo Gracie is Melissa Anne Bardfield, who will represent team Renzo Gracie St. Maarten.

Luciana ‘Luka’ Dias

In Master 3 division, we find Cynthia Dyann Hales in lightweight, third degree black belt representing Gracie Barra Seattle, this woman is a former MMA fighter, successful competitor and a part of the female dirty dozen, the first 12 non-Brazilians to receive a black belt. In the same division we’ll see Hanna Sillén representing Viva Zapata Jiu Jitsu, pioneer within female MMA in Europe. The best for last, in middle weight Luciana ‘Luka’ Dias, earning her black belt in 2003 under Wellington Megaton Dias. Throughout the 2000’s decade Luka was one of the most successful competitors, she is holding no less than three wins of Gabrielle Garcia, among them two submission victories by choke. Luka is also stepmom to a well-known competitor, Mackenzie Dern.

Johanna Tavares is a purple belt under Renato Tavares de Moraes. She trains under Renato and Eduardo "Teta" Rios, representing Frontline Academy in Oslo. Besides jiu jitsu, Johanna is also a club manager, fitness instructor and CrossFit level 1 trainer. She contributes to the Ladies Only BJJ blog and website also teaching women only jiu jitsu classes at Novus Academy and organizing open mat for all them jiu jitsu ladies in Norway.
